Abstract
[Relationships Between Vestibular-Kinesthetic Stimulations Provided by Mothers and Infants Exploratory Behaviours]
Relationships between the frequency of vestibular-kinesthetic stimulations provided by mothers to infants during daily interactions and infants’ exploratory behaviours in a strange situation were examined in eighteen mother-infant dyads. During five consecutive days, two hours a day, mothers noted all occurrences when they picked up their infant. In the laboratory, a first session permitted to observe mother-infant interactions while alone. Thereafter the mother-infant dyad was introduced into a room furnished with novel toys. Infants’ behaviours were observed. Visual fixation and movement towards the toys or other objects, mouth or hand contact with them, and vocalization measured infants’ exploratory behaviours, while visual fixation, movement towards and contact with the mother measured their attachment. Results indicated a relationship between the frequency of vestibular-kinesthetic stimulations recorded by the mother, four categories of exploratory behaviour and mother and infant vocalizations during the interaction session. These observations are discussed with regard to the effects of specific early experiences on development.
