Abstract

The present research focuses on the particular problem of arousing need achievement. Starting from formulations of the studied authors themselves objections were made against the arousal procedure of the McClelland-Atkinson tradition. Instead of giving achievement-oriented instructions an alternative procedure was designed which involves a personal setting of the level of aspiration. Two experiments on both male and female subjects were carried out to compare the effect of this alternative with that of a neutral task condition, and that of the usual achievement-oriented condition. In both experiments the alternative showed more arousal power on the performance level than both other conditions. Also some evidence could be gathered that the alternative states a somewhat purer arousal condition for the achievement motive than the usual achievement-oriented condition. The results for male and female subjects were situated in the same direction.
